Kikuyu Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Kimani Ichungw’ah has dismissed a public declaration made by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, declaring June 25 as a national holiday, in honour of Gen Zs who died on June 25 during controversial 2024 Finance Bill.
According to Ichungw’ah, a public holiday can only be declared by the government, through the Ministry of Interior and National Security, and not any random Kenyan.
“Leo naskia wakisema ati 25th of June is a public holiday, there is nobody with the power to declare public holiday other than the government of Kenya through the Ministry of Interior and National Security,” Ichungwa’h remarked.
Ichungwa’ah further slammed the opposition for using the unfortunate events that happened in June 2024, and politicizing the deaths of the young people, and asked them to look for a better agenda to popularize. Ichungwa’ah said that they will not allow the opposition to weaponize one generation against other generations.
“For those who imagine that the unfortunate events of June last year are meant to incite Kenyans with, please look for another agenda. Death of our children or any other Kenyan is not a matter to joke around with nor politicize. I want to tell you Kenya has no space for division amongst the generations, we are a nation of many generations, and we will not allow you to weaponize one generation against other generations, I know they want to divide our children against generations, we will not allow that,” he further added.
During a church service in Kilifi, Kalonzo asked Kenyans to skip work and join them in honour of the lives lost in June 2024 at Parliament Buildings, further stating that they will light candles outside parliament on that day.
“We ask the Church to join us on June 25 as we go to Parliament. I have this idea that Kenya should go there and light candles in front of the Parliament building and christen the place because the blood of our children was spilt there. We shall light candles on June 25 outside Parliament. Just light candles in an organised manner for the remembrance of the fallen Gen Zs,” Kalonzo stated.
Vocal bloggers and pioneers of the June 25, #OccuppyParliament had earlier stated that they will celebrate Madaraka Day on June 25, to honour their colleagues killed during the protests.
