Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has faulted opposition leaders, foreign envoys and religious leaders for biased criticism of the recent aftermath of the protests in the country.
Speaking at State House Nairobi on Saturday, June 28, Murkomen said that they are quick to call out the police for using excessive force while dealing with protesters, but not speak up when police officers are attacked and police stations torched.
Murkomen said that he will use his expertism as a lawyer to speak for them, as they continue to receive harsh criticism from Kenyans and members from High Commissioners in the country.
“When a police officer is attacked or a police station is burnt, no church leader will speak, nor foreign envoy will speak, these so called opposition leaders will not speak. I’m the Minister in-charge of these if I do not speak for them, who will?” He questioned.
According to Murkomen, Kenyans have failed to recognize the critical role played by the officers, who put their lives one line to protect Kenyans. He further started the harsh conditions that the officers go through to ensure the country is safe. He faulted the recent targeted attacks by members of the public to the police.
“I have as a cabinet secretary to lead from the front, some people don’t know the life that the police officers go through . Yesterday I was the police officers who were going to the border fighting Al-Shabaab, sleeping in Boni Forest and around the borders of this country, putting their lives to keep citizens, but it has become a pattern to attack them,” Murkomen explained.
His sentiments were echoed by the President William Ruto, emphasized his support to the police in their line of duty, further condemning the attacks recently meted on them. Ruto said that all those who attacked the police must be charged to account for their daring acts.
