Mt. Kenya Power and Lighting Company Security officers have arrested five people in Kirinyaga County in possession of illegal connections, stealing meters and CIUs, timber wooden climber and safety belt.
Confirming the incident, Kirinyaga KPLC branch manager Eng. Ruto Kipkorir said that the five suspects were arrested in Kagio town and are being held at Kiamaciri Police Station.
According to Kipkorir, John Wareri, a notorious suspect has been hiding at Kagio town has been on KPLC security team radar, for conducting illegal connections and interfering with TX fuses within Kirinyaga County.
According to a report by Citizen Digital, Wareri will be charged with carrying out electricity operations without a valid license.
“The suspect was taken to Kiamaciri police station and will be charged with offense of carrying out electricity operations without license, unauthorized connections of energy and other energy related offenses,” Kipkorir confirmed.
Other suspects arrested by KPLC include Nelson Maina, identified as Chairperson Kagio Electrician’s Welfare Group for carrying out illegal connections, David Mungai was arrested at Kiamaciri village, and was in possession of a pair of wooden climbers a safety belt and a set of assorted electric tools.
“The suspect has been on our security radar for carrying out illegal connections and interfering with Tx fuses within Kirinyaga County. His motor bike was detained at Kiamaciri police station,” he added.
Another suspect identified as Jane Wangithi was arrested following successful tips to the country’s lighting company security team. Wangithi was arrested along her tenant Ken Kathimba, who were found in possession of three migrated prepaid meters. The two were taken to Kiamaciri Police Post.
In June, KPLC arrested three people including an officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nairobi after they were caught vandalizing high voltage underground power cables near Nyayo Stadium.
During his visit at Kangai village in Mwea Constituency, Energy Principal Secretary (PS) Alex Wachira cautioned against stealing and vandalising KPLC equipment calling on residents to report any suspicious activity near powerlines and transformers.
