Leaders from the opposition have slammed the Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission (EACC), statement on allegations against Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya, released on Monday, May 19.
According to the commission, Natembeya is being investigated along some of his staffs for irregular procurement and fictious payments of KSh 1.4 billion.
Eugene Wamalwa party leader DAP-K, has slammed EACC for allowing to be used to settle political scores, stating that the three projects implicated in the irregularities are a major project of Natembeya’s regime known by the public.
“Stop being used to settle political scores by kk regime. All the 3 said projects are key deliverables by Governor George Natembeya and they are in the public domain on course to completion,” Wamalwa said.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo had called out the Kenya Kwanza regime for using state security and EACC to intimidate the opposition, condemning the weaponization of the state agencies for political fights.
The EAAC says the allegations are linked to three key ongoing projects in the county including; rehabilitation and modernization of the Kenyatta Stadium phase four, construction of the Trans Nzoia County HQs and the Tom Mboya Hospital.
According to EACC, the governor is accused of influencing the awarding of tenders to CM Construction Company Limited, Session Blue Contractors Limited and Parbat Siyan Construction Limited through senior county officials.
The officials also implicated include chief officers Emmanuel Masungo and Dorothy Nyukuri of Finance and water respectively, Eliyah Liambula Director procurement and Desmond Shivachi, a contractor that is allegedly linked to be a close associate of Natembeya.
Additionally, the commission has said it is also probing allegations of money laundering and accumulation of unexplainable wealth by senior county officials, suspected to be part of a broader scheme to conceal the proceeds of crime.
“The search operation has resulted in the recovery of critical evidentiary material to support ongoing investigations,” read the statement.
EACC has also condemned the vandalization of the cars belonging to Director of criminal Investigations by rowdy youths during the raid in Kitale, who were protesting against the arrest of their governor outside his house in Milimani.
Earlier, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi had condemned the raid terming it as a form of anarchy and backwardness as a country. He called on officers to provide evidence and notice before raiding leaders homes and offices. He demanded an explanation to be given to people of Trans Nzoia on why their governor is being arrested.
