An 80-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old child in North Horr constituency, Marsabit County.
The Marsabit Court has found Gufu Watu Bule, guilty after evidence revealed that on May 25, 2024, in Manyatta Turbi, Marsabit North sub-county, Gufu raped the 11-year-old child.
According to the judgment delivered by Marsabit Senior Chief Magistrate Christine Wekesa, on Monday, May 25, evidence has made it clear that the victim was playing with other children outside their home, when Gufu called her and took her to his son’s house and subjected her to the brutality.
Following the event, the victim went home and reported to her mother what had happened to her, before she was taken to the hospital the following day, and filed a report at Turbi, North Horr police station.
During an interview last week, Marsabit Women Representative Naomi Waqo, urged elders in the region not to conceal and uphold cultures that diminish the chances of prosperity for their daughters including settling cases of assault at home, and promoting earlier marriages for girls in the county.
Same sentiments were echoed by Nuria Gollo, a human rights activist, urged that such cases involving infringement of rights and defilement be settled in court and by elders.
The man, who is the victim’s neighbor, has 14 days to appeal. The sentence come as Kenyans are demanding justice for seven year old Baby Tamara Blessing who was found raped and killed.
