Vulnerable residents of Dukana in Marsabit County received cash transfer assistance from Strategies for Northern Development (SND), with partnership of Plan International Kenya are currently in North Horr.
240 households are set to benefit from the program, according to SND manager Dukana office Jacob Alemu, who said each family will receive KSh 9,000, aimed to sustain families.
Alemu further stated that the program targets to assist school going girls and boys in Dukana Location. The program will see 250 girls benefiting from what they dubbed as dignity kits park. The kit includes sanitary towels, inner wears, Colgate, tooth brush and bar soap. Similarly, 150 school Boys will get inner wears, Colgate, tooth brush and bar soaps.
Alemu said that 145 students from the three schools Dukana Girls’, Boys’ and Dukana High school, who lost their uniforms two weeks ago when their houses were burnt in an ethnic clash that left four people dead, will receive uniforms, books pens/pencils and rubber.
SND office in Dukana assured the residents that they will ensure the assistance gets to the deserving persons with the help of the selected community leadership.
The residents also received food and non-food stuff from both National and County governments, as well as from the Kenya Red Cross Society, who provided tents for 34 families.
Speaking during the distribution on Monday, May 27, Red Cross Disaster Manager confirmed that the team provided foodstuffs to 500 households from the vulnerable families in Dukana location, as residents slowly start rebuilding their lives crashed by the unspontaneous attacks.
The relief assistance to residents was earlier called upon by Dukana Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Peter Kimani, who urged well-wishers to donate towards the affected areas struck with hunger and ethnic clashes.
Additionally, 400 families in the Loiyangalani area of Marsabit County have benefited from food aid from the National government, as a way to address the problem of hunger in the region.
