Former Marsabit governor and National Treasury CS Ukur Yattani met with residents of North Horr and Dukana areas, on Friday 13, and urged them to come out in large numbers and register for the National Identification Cards (IDs).
His calls come as President William Ruto lifted the mandatory vetting process during the application process, which according to leaders in the region had hindered a majority of residents to acquire the crucial national document.
Earlier, Marsabit County Registrar of people Isaac Kibet, reported that there was an increase in the number of new applicants, following the lift, a majority of them being youths, with a significant number of the elders turning up for the registration process across various parts of the county.
“Since the vetting committee was removed , the number has increased, as those elders who did not have IDs , have applied and received their IDs. The previous vetting process barred a number of them to own IDs. The process is easier, as one only needs the approval of the chief to certify that they are Kenyans. The process has recorded an increase from previously 44% to 62%, a significant increase of 18% in the whole of Marsabit County,” Kibet confirmed.
However, Kibet stated that Dukana and Turbi sub-counties had so far recorded a small number of applications, due to small number of people, unlike Moyale, where there has been a large massive turn up by first time applicants.
Additionally, Yattani urged residents in Loiyangalani area to maintain peace, following a series on unrest in the area, calls that constantly have been made by leaders from the area, to allow development in the area. The Sub-County has witnessed inter-community conflict, unspontaneous attacks leading to loss of property and loss of lives.
The former CS was in company of MCAs Tura Ruru, Dukana Adano Boru and elder Elema Fila, who emphasized on the need of peace for development to be witnessed in the county.
The visits directly sealing his early gubernatorial race of 2027, to finish his term, with allegations he is a project by the incumbent Governor Mahmoud Ali, to divide the votes of the community.
