A call has been made to the residents of Marsabit, following an increase of use of Diabetes injection insulin to reduce weight among youths.
According to the head of non-communicable disease at the Marsabit Referral Hospital Sororo Abudho Ginda, insulin is meant for diabetic patients, and any use outside the prescriptions is very harmful to the human body.
“We have heard of cases of people using diabetes injections to reduce weight. Injecting yourself and you do not have diabetes is very risky. I would like to caution our people that it is very harmful to ones health,” Sororo cautioned.
Ginda further mentioned life threatening conditions that could arise from the misuse of insulin, including kidney failure, heart related conditions and possible induced diabetes.
“This injections have effects that could lead to kidney and heart failure, it is sad that it is common among youths. The misuse of the injection has led to children developing diabetes and other conditions that accompany diabetes like eye problem,” she explained.
He made an appeal to the society, to create awareness among the youths, as they are the most affected with the use of other drugs and insulin injections. Calling on the community and school peer counselors to closely monitor the students.
“It is my desire that enough awareness is created among our youths in our community, as well as peer counsellors in our schools. Those who want to lose weight especially those using the injections to lose weight. Check on your health, Diabetes is permanent and very costly,” she urged.
Her calls come days after calls were made to create more awareness on mental health among youths and the society. According to Dr. William Mbaabu from Bee Hive Hospital in Marsabit town, said that there is less awareness and knowledge in the society about mental health disorders, that has led to stigmatization of patients, urging that there is need of carrying out intensive mental health awareness to the society.
