Marsabit County senator Mohamed Chute led the communities in Loiyangalani comprising of Elmolo, Samburu, Turkana and Rendile in a peace declaration agreement, aimed at restoring peace in the area, after days of unrest witnessed in the area.
Chute was in company of Chairman Giants of Twiga Mr. Mukesh, Loiyangalani Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Stanley Kimanga, local leaders and residents, in a peace commitment to be adhered by the communities in Loiyangalani.
While addressing the residents, Chute emphasized on the importance of peace in the county, as it is a major contributor to the development and attraction of investors in the area to start investments that will help open up the region. He further urged the communities to rise above old enmity, and embrace peace for a peaceful future generation.
“Peace is the foundation of development, and without it, we cannot prosper. Let us choose dialogue over division, and brotherhood over conflict,” Senator Chute stated.
Echoing the sentiments of his host, Mukesh urged the residents to focus on keeping peace in the county, as it is the only way to open up the vast county for investors.
“Peace is very important, let us all maintain peace, for the sake of our community and land, It is my prayer that peace reigns in this area and the whole Marsabit,” Mukesh added.
The meeting came up with an unanimous agreement among the communities to end inter-communal hostilities, and work hand-in-hand with security agencies. As part of the agreement, residents pledged to report any incidents that could threaten stability, while youth were strongly cautioned against using social media platforms to incite violence or spread inflammatory content.
Kimanga commended the commitment shown by the senator and the communities, and announced that new security measures would be implemented. These include proper identification protocols for all visitors to the region and structured mechanisms to resolve disputes over grazing land one of the main causes of tension in the past.
“I want to appreciate the Senator for his commitment to ensure that we restore peace and calmness in our area. As security, we will ensure that the we implement all that is said, including proper identification of people who visit our area, and come up with strategies to solve the main menace of the fight over the grazing lands,” Kimanga stated.
