Suspect arrested in the murder of Miraa trader in Marsabit County to remain in police custody for four days, until when his case will begin on June, Tuesday 24.
Marsabit High Court Judge Christine Wekesa, directed that the suspect be locked until investigations are concluded as requested in an application by the prosecution team.
The suspect identified as Ayala Makura Mamo, will undergo a mental assessment test, before the court begins the hearing process at the High Court on Tuesday next week before Judge Francis Ole Raiyola.
The Court has also directed the officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), to accompany the suspect to Marsabit County Referral Hospital during the assessment test and receive medical attention, as the suspect complained about pains on his right arm.
Mamo was arrested on Tuesday evening in Marsabit Town, after together with two others stabbed the deceased on the head who died while receiving treatment at the Marsabit County Referral Hospital. The two suspects managed to flee from the scene and remain on loose, as police officers continue to search for them.
According to witnesses, Mamo and his friends approached the deceased and demanded for free Miraa, when the commotion began, and they retrieved the knife and stabbed the man.
Residents held protests at the Marsabit Central Police Station, and Marsabit County Referral Hospital, demanding justice and an the suspect to tell them why he killed traders. the irate traders had claimed the murder to be a tribal targeted, remarks that were refuted by Marsabit Central Ward MCA Jack Elisha.
Elisha while addressing the angry residents, stated that the ward has more than 14 communities living there, and have the right to do business in the area, without interference, as outline in the Constitution of Kenya.
“Every person has a right to do business, and the right to live in any part of the county. No one should threaten the people of down country. The suspect is in police custody and we want witnesses to come out and record their statements. We will not allow such acts in the county,” Elisha stated earlier.
Other leaders from the county condemned the incident, urging residents who witnessed to come out and record statements for the deceased to get justice.
