Marsabit County Woman Representative Naomi Waqo has public declared that she will be in the gubernatorial race to take over incumbent Governor Mahmoud Ali in the 2027 General Elections.
Clearing the suspicious romours whether she will be on the ballot. Speaking in Marsabit on Tuesday, Waqo highlighting on the unpredictable political environment, she said that she will remain focused on her goal, which is to clinch the seat.
“My people have heard that I’m preparing myself to vie for governorship. I want people to get it clearly, that I will be going for Marsabit governor, with my hope in my people especially women,” she declared.
She refuted claims that she had dropped her ambition for Saku Constituency legislator Rasso Ali, reinforcing that she will not step aside for anyone, but they should give her the opportunity.
“I’ve heard some people say I’ve stepped down for Rasso; why should a woman always step aside for a man? Why don’t men ever step down for us?” Waqo questioned.
Waqo expressed her readiness to take charge of the county leadership, urging residents especially men, to avoid stereotypes against women leadership, and give women an opportunity to lead. She said among her first agenda will be resuming of operation in all closed facilities in the county, to ensure that women do not deliver under trees.
“I was saddened that some areas have no hospitals, I want to assure you that I will revive all dispensaries and other small facilities to ensure that our women do not deliver under trees,” she stated.
She pledged to use her connections and network to ensure continuous empowerment of women and men in the county, as well as partners to bring development in the county, especially to drill water for residents a menace long standing in the arid county.
Her entry into gubernatorial race brings a shift in the race in what will be perceived as history in the region, with other aspirants including former National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani, former North Horr MP Chachu Ganya, Roba Duba among others. The leaders have emphasized calls to their protesters to apply for National Identification Cards (IDs), and register as voters.
