Youths from North Horr and Maikona wards in North Horr Constituency, Marsabit county have called on the government to ensure that those responsible for the killing of four people last week in North Horr and Dukana wards, are arrested as soon as possible.
Speaking with a local radio station, the youths led by Molu Guyo have expressed their sadness over the criminal incidents that have occurred in the area, describing them as holding the area back in terms of development.
“We have an initiative among youths to bring together Gabbra and Wayu communities starting from North Horr where we met leaders from community and agreed to prioritize peace. We are emphasizing on the arrest of those linked to the killings so that people can live in peace, as that is what is required even for development,” Guyo said.
Guyo, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, called for the issue of peace not to be politicized, while urging those who intend to run for various positions in the upcoming general elections to seek votes without dividing the people.
“Lets not use division to intimidate our opponents as leaders, if you are vying for a seat, tell the people your agenda and seek votes without incitement as you had not taken the initiative to call the communities to peace. These actions are derailing development in our county,” he further remarked.
In addition, Guyo said that they have been carrying a campaign to preach peace in the North Horr constituency, especially in areas that have witnessed conflict, while agreeing with youth from other communities to be peace ambassadors.
“We talked to both communities and they are ready to live in harmony and come together. We are urging that even those in Dukana to embrace peace and wipe out criminals in our midst. We have coexisted as a community that appreciates everyone and religion, lets not disrupt the harmony that has been there for decades,” Guyo called upon the residents.
Guyo has called on both communities not to retaliate as that will not help in the search for a lasting solution. Sentiments that have been echoes by the county governor Mahmoud Ali and human rights activist Nuria Gollo.
“Taking revenge does not help, let us not tribalize the issue, lets learn to single out criminals without involving the whole community. Lets arrest the specific individuals and forward them to relevant authorities, so that we can restore peace in our area,” he concluded.
