Residents in Meru have appealed to President William Ruto to appoint Senator Kathuri Murungi as Cabinet Secretary of Agriculture following his efforts to streamline Miraa farming in the county.
Speaking during a public participation with the Senate Defense Committee led by the Chairperson Isiolo senator Fatuma Dullo in the county, the youths led by Isaiah Thuranira from Igembe said that they laud the move by Murungi to review the recent categorization of Miraa as a drug by National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA).
According to Thuranira, Murungi has outdone himself in ensuring that Miraa business flows, and returns to its former glory supporting livelihoods in the county, efforts he said can be reflected in the tea and coffee farming in the area, if given an opportunity to serve in the Ministry.
“I want to appreciate our Senator for coming with the team form senate to come review and lift the recent categorization of Miraa as a drug by NACADA, we are asking President William Ruto to see that he has outdone himself, we want him to fill the gap at the Ministry of Agriculture as he the good work he is doing in Miraa farming can be reflected in tea and coffee farming,” Thuranira remarked.
The forum aimed at engaging Miraa farmers and stakeholders in Laare Igembe North, argued that his efforts in reviving the business, will end many challenges in the business including cartels and recent ban by several county governors of Miraa entry in their region.
The residents further expressed their support behind the president, dismissing the domination of Wantam, that has seen former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi joining former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the Wantam Slogan. stating that they are solid behind him to ensure the region reaps from the development of the Kenya Kwanza government.
“Biashara ya miraa ikifunguka, ndio maisha ikue mzuri, hatutasema sisi Wantam, we plead with you, tutasema Tutam, if you guarantee to us that Miraa farming is moving on wee, and give us Senator Murungi as CS agriculture,” he further remarked.
Currently Meru has only one minister in the Kenya Kwanza government Water, Sanitation and Irrigation in Kenya Eng. Eric Murithi Mugaa.
