After finding himself in the deaths witnessed during his tenure as Interior Cabinet Secreatry Fred Matiang’i has received another blow in his candidature after controversial lawyer Migun Miguna said he was unfit to hold public office.
Miguna Miguna accused the former CS abuse of power and impunity. In an interview, Miguna said that Matiang’i exhibited the worst excessive use of power by security agencies and government institutions, citing his personal experience including his abduction, deportation, and destruction of property in 2018.
Speaking during an interview on Sunday, he further highlighted the bodies recovered from River Yala during Matiang’i’s tenure, as well as defying court orders and directives.
“Dr. Matiang’i exemplified the abuse of power in its purest form. The River Yala murders, abductions he engaged in, the destruction of my house, my abduction and detention in-communicado and torture of many days in defiance of multiple court orders,” he remarked.
In 2018, the Canadian-based lawyer was deported in Kenya following his act to swear in the then chief opposition leader Raila Odinga as the people’s president. He singled out and accused the former CS of overseeing his sedation and forceful removal from Kenya while unconscious and left in Dubai, and barring his return in the country.
He said that Matiang’i defied orders by Justice Odunga and Chacha Mwita, who found him guilty of committing atrocities against him. He further threw banter to President William Ruto’s led administration for failing to hold them accountable.
“Ruto’s regime is not interested in ensuring that those orders are complied with, one of the things that ought to have been done was to put people like Matiang’i, Karanja Kibicho, Said Kiprotich and former DCI Kinoti in jail for contempt of court,” Miguna explained.
The controversial lawyer also disclosed that he has an active case in the country, seeking damages from atrocities committed against him by Matiang’i and others involved in his deportation, arrest and illegal detention.
Miguna accused the head of state for riding on the promises he made to him during his return in the country in 2022, where he said that he would instruct former Attorney General Justin Muturi to sort the matter. According to him, the matter has remained like any other lie and promises made by Ruto.
“Mr. Ruto said to me when I returned to Kenya that he would instruct the former AG Justin Muturi to resolve those matters. Like any other lie he has told many other Kenyans, he did not comply with that undertaking,” he said.
He warned Kenyans against picking and electing leaders with previous cases of abuse of power and office, and instead reject them.
“We cannot tolerate and entertain characters like Matiang’i who have not been held accountable, even though there were several court orders that found violation of the Constitution, but unfit to hold office,” he cautioned.
He argued that nobody was above the law and clarifying his adherence to the rule of law during his time in office as minister, challenging a course to the investigative authority in the country DCI.
