Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has slammed the court for releasing protesters who stormed a hospital in Kitengela while a C-section operation was underway.
The two suspects were accused of storming the, interrupting an emergency caesarean section and terrorising patients and medical staff.
Speaking his state of security in the country, Murkomen stated that thousands of protesters were arrested during Saba Saba and June 25 protests across the country for destruction of property and causing mayhem.
Murkomen said that the Court’s decision to release the two arrested suspects on KSh 50,000 was unacceptable and too lenient punishment for a such a daring and life threatening act.
“Two suspects have been arrested and arraigned. The two were granted cash bail of KSh 50,000. These lenient bail terms are unacceptable. It is in hospitals that we seek refuge at our most vulnerable moments, and to infringe on this privacy is an offence most foul,” Murkomen said.
Murkomen said that 1,500 people were arrested following the two protests across the country, and are facing various charges including terrorism, murder robbery with violence, sexual assault, arson , malicious damage of property and targeted attacks on strategic infrastructure.
According to the CS, 50 suspects are under investigation by serious crimes unit, while 71 cases are under the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit for offenses related to terrorism. He attributed the success to arrest on timely intelligence by the security system.
“We commend our security agencies for foiling further destruction and wish a quick recovery to those injured during the unprecedented violence. The operation was made possible through timely intelligence, which revealed plans to target critical infrastructure including transport system,” Murkomen commended.
Murkomen further stated that 42 Kenyans lost their lives during the two protests, 600 Kenyans injured with 496 being police officers, sending his message of good will to all affected families from the protests.
“This is unacceptable. One life lost is one to many. We mourn every life lost and extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the affected families. To those who suffered injury, loss, trauma on those two fateful days of sheer terror, we say poleni sana,” he added.
