The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) is set to implement strict measures and rules on the sale and consumption of alcohol and drugs.
The measures proposed by the National Policy on the Prevention of Alcohol, Drugs and Substance Use (2025), seeks to curb consumption of alcohol in the country, especially the youthful generation.
Among the proposed measures include banning the sale of alcohol near schools, places of worship, and responsible promotion of alcohol content.
Additionally, the new policy seeks to raise the age consumption of alcohol from current 18 years to 21 years, while further protecting the group that is working on avoiding drug and substance abuse.
The policy was approved by the Cabinet on June 24, giving the Authority a greenlight to implement the new guidelines. NACADA is also in rush to ensure Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) in the country against consumption and outcomes of the effects of consumption of alcohol and drug abuse.
In a report released by NACADA in February 2025, the Authority during the launch of Status of Drugs and Substance Use Among University Students in Kenya, revealed that alcohol remained to be the most commonly used substance among university students.
The static from the report indicated that 87.3% consumed alcohol, while 64.4% and 41.2% consumed Cigarette and Shisha respectively. From the study, 66.4% said access the drugs from close friends, while 59.3% said they get drugs from neighbours and nearby bars and shops.
In Trans Nzoia, complementing the efforts by NACADA Afya Care Foundation has been creating awareness among students in High Schools and tertiary institutions in the large Western region, on the dangers of getting involved in drug and substance abuse at a young age, and how it threatens their future as well that of the country.
