Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has distanced himself from ongoing allegations of hiring goons to infiltrate Tuesday protests in Nairobi, held by human rights activist over the death of X blogger Albert Ojwang’.
In a statement on Sunday, Sakaja stated that the allegations about him are politically motivated and false, orchestrated by his political enemies.
“For days I have observed with deep concern the circulation of false, malicious and politically motivated allegations against me. For the records, and to make it clear, I have never and will never sponsor violence of any kind,” Sakaja stated.
According to him, he has been an advocate of non-violent politics, that upholds dignity of human rights and the rule of law. He further stated that the accusations are desperate moves by his opponents, sentiments indirectly hitting Embakasi legislator Babu Owino, who called him a failure and an embarrassment to the people of Nairobi.
“My entire political life has been anchored on Siasa Safi, which upholds human dignity, the rule of law and democratic right of every Kenyan. I have never used violence to gain power, these accusations are not only false, they are desperate attempts by certain well known individuals, whose political careers are marked by violence, intimidation and chaos,” Sakaja further stated.
He said that the goons who infiltrated the Tuesday peaceful protests were hired by his opponents. He urged the residents to avoid violence as they protest on the streets on June, Wednesday 25.
“I have spoken to the commander of the police to assure peaceful demonstrators that they will be protected as they express their rights, as in the constitution for police to protect life and property,” he urged.
The protests witnessed a chilling partnership between the police and goons, who looted, robbed and destroyed public property, as the police watched and directed them where the protesters were. In the evening as they passed near City Hall, they were captured chanting victory songs and telling Sakaja they managed to protect the city.
The incident was condemned by leaders and religious leaders as well, following the infiltration of goons, and the shooting of the mask hawker Boniface Mwangi.
