Nairobi senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, has slammed Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi, for defending Tanzania after Kenyan activists and Senior Counsel Martha Karua were deported back in the country over the weekend.
According to Sifuna, Musalia siding with the Tanzania government is unimaginable, questioning the acquisition of power by close allies of President William Ruto.
“Our minister for foreign affairs taking Tanzania’s side on the deportation of Kenyans is wild. Who put these people in power? Bure Kabisa!” Sifuna wrote.
Speaking during an interview with a local television station, Musalia defended the remarks of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu over protection of the country’s interference from external forces after her authorities deported Kenya activists in Tanzania to follow the prosecution Tundu Lissu the opposition in Suluhu’s government.
“I will not protest her remarks, as I think there is some element of truth in it. Let us face the facts. The level of etiquette, insults that we see in country even though it is the freedom speech, is going overboard. She is saying that people have sometimes gone to extremes in their utterances in Kenya, which is a fact,” Musalia remarked.
On Monday, activists Hanifa Farsafi, Boniface Mwangi and former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga were detained at Julius Nyerere International Airport before being deported back at Nairobi, however, his Emeritus former chief justice David Maraga was allowed and attended the hearing of Lissu.
Karua faulted the move by the Tanzania Authorities as oppression and called on East African Community to fight the oppression that has recently been exhibited by the heads of state, jeopardizing the relations between member countries.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, condemned the incident which she said threatens the establishment of the East African Treaty, that calls for free movement of citizens of member countries without restrictions.
She faulted the act as illegal and called for speedy explanation for the retraining of Senior Counsel Karua ad their member Gloria Kimani and journalist Lynn Ngugi. Earlier Karua had denied to represent Uganda opposition leader Kizze Besigye after Ugandan law society declined to hand her certification.
