Nakuru governor Susan Kihika has defended her decision to deliver her twin babies from the United States. According to Kihika, it is inappropriate for her “junior” staffs to see her nakedness.
In a viral video circulating online, Kihika is heard addressing a vibrant crowd during the Madaraka Day Celebrations in her native Kikuyu language about the duty of women in bearing child, and being the governor has does not mean she cannot have babies.
She further sated that as the governor, all the doctors and nurses working under her cannot deliver her and see her nakedness as their boss.
“Women, you know our job is to have babies. Just because I am the governor, does it mean I can’t have babies? Also, you know I am the governor. All doctors and nurses are under me. Did you really want me to lay on a table with the same doctors helping me deliver?” she questioned.
According to the first time governor, after the situation, it will be an awkward situation during the meeting with the same doctors and nurses in during the meeting. She promised to build a maternity ward for women in the area, with maternity services similar with what she received in United States.
However, her remarks have raised a debate on social media, who criticised her for undermining the doctors by calling them her junior workers. Comparing her recent move with former Makueni governor underwent a surgery at Makueni County Referral Hospital.
“Kivutha Kibwana, then Governor of Makueni, underwent surgery at Makueni County Referral Hospital in 2022, yet Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika claims she couldn’t deliver in a county hospital because her juniors would see her nakedness,” @Prime Media wrote.
“When leaders like Susan Kihika say they can’t give birth locally because doctors are “under them,” it’s not just tone-deaf—it’s an insult to Kenya’s health workers. If our hospitals aren’t good enough for you, why are they good enough for the rest of us?” @MathengeKarugu.
“Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika says she gave birth abroad because all doctors in Nakuru are “under her” and she didn’t want them to see her naked. Let’s get this straight, The same public health system she oversees isn’t good enough for her own childbirth because modesty outweighs medical professionalism? Does she not trust Kenyan doctors to uphold ethics and confidentiality?” @ Lynn Ngugi wrote.
