Residents of Dukana Ward in North Horr Sub County, are set to receive goats donated by the National Government in the area, to boost production and economic activity of pastoralist communities in the Ward.
In an exercise that was overseen by Dukana Deputy County Commissioner Peter Kimani, 205 goats were distributed to 41 families in the wards four locations namely Balesa, Dukana, Elhadi and Balesaru. Vulnerable families from the four locations have been given priority in the livestock distribution exercise.
Kimani said that each family will receive five goats, four being female and one male. According to him, the move is set to increase breeding in the area, as well as to increase their livestock and production, as livestock keeping is the community’s main economic activity.
“This move is to ensure that residents of Dukana increase their livestock, breed their goats more, and increase production to sustain their families, and include goats in their breeds that withstand the extreme to mild weather conditions in the county,” Kimani stated.
According to Kimani, a similar exercise was conducted in the area by the National government two years ago. The initiative was aimed at supporting pastoralists who had lost a section of their livestock through drought experienced in 2023.
Kimani further added that aside from the goats, the National Government through the office of special programs, had donated food relief for the families, including 600 bags of rice, 50kgs each and 520bags of beans. The donation complements the relief earlier offered to residents by Kenya Red Cross Society.
Red Cross donated tents, bar soaps and other food to the residents who had been massively affected by the clash between Gabbra and Wayu Communities, which left four families mourning their loved ones, while property of unknown value destroyed after houses were torched to ashes.
During the Madaraka day Celebrations held in sub-county at Maikona, Governor Mahmoud Ali urged residents to live in peace, as the continued unrest is affecting development in the region, and impoverishing the county further.
The calls of peace have been a major talk in the region by both, religious leaders, community elders, peace champions and political leaders. Interior Cabinet Secretary urged leaders to stop inciting the community as the country heads towards the electioneering period.
