Police in Embu have arrested and arraigned a man reportedly linked to organising, mobilising violent protesters during recent Saba Saba protests in Embu County.
According to a statement by Tthe Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the man identified as Joseph Mbira Thuku is believed to be among the main organisers of the protests that led to massive destruction of property in the county.
“In a well-coordinated operation, detectives have arrested Joseph Mbira Thuku, a key figure behind the violent protests that recently rocked Embu town,” DCI stated.
Thuku was arraigned at Kahawa Law Courts, which granted detectives a five-day custodial order to allow for comprehensive investigations in the matter.
“Thuku, identified as one of the main mobilizers of the violent protests, was swiftly apprehended and arraigned before the Kahawa Law Courts. The court granted detectives a five-day custodial order to allow for comprehensive investigations,” further read the statement.
The case will be mentioned on Monday, August 4, 2025. His arrest comes weeks after Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji was arrested and charged with terrorism related offenses for sponsoring and mobilising protests in Embu Town.
The case is among the ongoing apprehension across the country following violent and chaotic June 25 protests and Saba Saba protests, which left not only over 50 lives lost, but government installations and civilian properties destroyed.
In their address, both President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen vowed to bring all those responsible for financing and organising protests in the country to book.
Ruto claimed that the series of protests were aimed at ousting him out of State House unconstitutionally, shifting the blame to the opposition, whom he accused of inciting youths to take to the streets as they advance their political agenda.
