The Kenyatta National Hospital has said it received a total of 16 causalities from Tuesday Protests in Nairobi, admitted with gunshot wounds and blunt trauma, as confirmed by the Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. William Sigilai.
Sigilai while addressing the press, said that the hospital Emergency Department received the victims from the protests, who were received by medics accessed treated, nine patients discharged as 7 others remain admitted with gunshots wounds.
“In total 16 patients were received at Kenyatta National Hospital as a result of the protest-related unrest. The injuries ranged from gunshot wounds to blunt trauma. Of these 7 patients were admitted for further management, 9 were treated and discharged, 2 have undergone surgery, and 4 more are scheduled for surgical procedure today,” Sigilai confirmed.
Sigilai said that one patient remains unidentified after he sustained a skull fracture reportedly from an assault during the protests that were infiltrated by goons.
Updating the nation on the status of Boniface Kariuki who was shot at a close range by an officer along Moi Avenue, Sigilai stated that the victim was shot on the left side of head, despite the bullet in his head being removed, Kariuki remains in a critical condition.
According to him, Kariuki was brought to the hospital at 8:50pm in a critical condition, with gunshot resulting in severe brain injury and excessive bleeding, when he was placed on a life support machine before Dr. Sam Njiru and his team conducted a two hour surgery on him after he was stabilized by the emergency team.
“This procedure lasted 2 hours and the bullet was successfully removed. The patient was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he remains on mechanical ventilation. While his condition is still critical, he is alive and under close round-the-clock observation and care by our medical team,” Sigilai reported.
Sigilai commended the swift action of the medical teams that referred the patient, as well as the members of the public, for what he termed as timely response.
Earlier during an interview, LSK President Faith Odhiambo has demanded the arrest and arraignment of the police in company with his colleague who shot Kariuki, as he is also assaulted Kariuki before he was shot.
