Families of the June 17 and 25 anniversary protests against police brutality and the marking of one year since the death of Gen Zs during the 2024 Anti-Finance Bill, have received a sigh of relief following the directive from the Cabinet Secretary of Health Aden Duale.
In statement signed by Dual dated June, Monday 29, He expressed his message of sympathy and condoled with the families who lost their loved ones following the recent protests, and expressed the Ministry’s support to those who sustained injuries from the protests.
“The recent demonstrations in Nairobi June 17 and 25, 2025, resulted in injuries and emotional distress for many Kenyans. As a ministry, our heart goes out to all those affected, and we remain committed to ensuring they receive the care and support they need,” Duale stated.
The Kenya Nation Commission of Human Rights (KNCHR), said 19 people had died from the June 25 protests, with over 400 injured, 14 women raped, 15 enforced disappearances and 179 arrested. Following the multitude of victims injured and admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Duale directed that the hospital’s management to waive all medical bills for injured patients in the hospital, through the Hospital’s Disaster Emergency Fund, including the accumulated amount of mask vendor Boniface Kariuki who died on Monday, 30 at 3:15pm according to his family. Kariuki was declared brain dead on Sunday by the doctors, despite of having a pulse.
“As a result, I have directed the management of Kenyatta National Hospital to waive all medical bills for patients injured during the protests and charge them to the hospital’s disaster Emergency Fund. This includes the outstanding bill of the late Mr. Boniface Kariuki, which stood at KSh 815,805 at the time of his passing,” Duale directed.
Kariuki was admitted at the hospital after he was shot on the head at a close point blank range by an officer on Tuesday 17 protests in Nairobi CBD along Moi Avenue. He underwent two surgeries at the hospital, but the doctors failed to remove residues of bullets logged in his skull.
