Nairobi city lawyer Willis Otieno has called Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for showing double standards on recent police conduct during Gen Z led protests on June 25 and July 7 across the country, which resulted in over 30 deaths.
Otieno slammed Muromen for publicly declaring and calling for accountability by the police officers in his press statements, after publicly giving a shoot to kill directive that affirms continuity of police brutality against unarmed protesters.
He accused Murkomen of contradicting himself and the law, by calling for accountability and giving deadly directive to National Police Service, which received massive criticism from his colleagues in the law question his credibility and overstepping on his duties.
“Funny. This is the same man who , not long ago, cheered on shoot-to-kill orders with chest thumping bravado. You can’t give greenlight for brutality in public, then pretend to care about accountability in press statements. You can’t speak the language of law by day and the language of blood by night,” Otieno stated.
He further faulted the CS for trying to vindicate himself on the atrocities by police officers, reminding him that the government is responsible for the death of innocent children killed at the comfort of their home.
Otieno challenged Murkomen to release the names of the officers involved, and stop coercing the country with press statements and calls for accountability.
“You don’t get to wash your hands clean while the state kills children in their homes. Murkomen, if you truly believe in justice then start with the names. The bodies. The bullets. The badges. Until then, spare us the hypocrisy,” he further stated.
On Tuesday, Murkomen in his state of address stated that the country witnessed a number of losses from looted, torched and destroyed government and public properties.
According to his report, 42 Kenyans lost their lives, 600 injured including 496 police officers and over 1500 people arrested and charged with different cases including malicious destruction of property, murder, sexual assault, arson and terrorism related acts, in the June 25 and July 7 Gen Z led protests.
Murkomen also revealed that one officer is already facing charges for shooting a protester during Tuesday, June 18 protests in Nairobi CBD, while investigations continue to unveil the rest.
