A section of leaders from Rift Valley want action to be taken against former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, over his recent remarks on the 2007/2008 post election violence.
Speaking during a church service in Uasin Gishu county, led by Kericho senator and the Majority Leader in the Senate Aaron Cheruiyot, the leaders called on government to persecute Gachagua over incitement. The leaders noted that in the recent days, the Democratic People’s Party (DCP), party leader has divided Kenyans on tribal Lines.
“We want to see Rigathi Gachagua prosecuted for what he said. He is calling for Kenyans to fight, harm each other and kill each other. He should be called to record a statement, be arraigned in court,” said Cheruiyot.
Cheruiyot further accused Gachagua for fueling hate and incitement, every time he appears before the interview. During an interview with Oga Obinna, Gachagua warned that, if the electoral commission IEBC tampers with the 2027 general elections, the aftermath will be worse than 2007/08 elections, where he likened it to a Christmas party.
Kesses MP Julius Ruto, also hitting out to Gachagua, saying the country does not want to go back to the situation in 2007/08, where the region was worst affected, urging Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen to take action.
“We do not want our country to go back to such events. We want CS Kipchumba Murkomen to take action on such people. They should record statements and answer why they want our country to head to the wrong direction,” Ruto added.
Reinforcing the two, Uasin Gishu senator Jackson Mandagor, said the county was worst hit, saying that it is one of the events they do not want to recall, or be reminded of.
However, Gachagua has been defended by his close allies, saying that an imagination and historical remembrance does not amount to a crime in the constitution of Kenya. His interim Deputy party leader Cleophas Malala said that if they want to arrest Gachagua, then the government will be forced to arrest every Kenyan.
Gachagua during his press address, said that his remarks were misinterpreted, as it was a precautionary statement and not incitement as alluded by leaders in the Kenya Kwanza government.
