Web developer and activist Rose Njeri has received reprieve after Milimani Law Courts Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsaringo dismissed a case filed against her citing lack of proper charge sheet.
Onsarigo stated that the charge sheet presented by the prosecution failed to meet the legal threshold required to constitute a valid charge. The activist was released on a cash bail of KSh 100,000, while she waited for the Court’s decision on whether she stands trial for a cybercrime offense.
Njeri was accused of violating Section 16 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, which criminalises unauthorized interference with computer systems, after she came up with an email that could help Kenyans submit their responses on the Finance Bill 2025.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Njeri’s web application had interfered with parliamentary Finance committee system.
However, Onsarigo ruled that the charge against Njeri as framed, could not proceed. After the Court session, she termed that the dropped charges against her were ridiculous, vowing not to backdown on the quest of fighting for good governance, as the arrest and torture after has made her even stronger.
Her arrest led to a public outrage demanding her release on Madaraka Day, with activists staging protests outside Pangani Police Station, where she had been detained.
