Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen praised police officers for protecting lives and properties during the commemoration of the Historical Saba Saba Day.
In a statement he released after visiting Nairobi CBD, Murkomen acknowledged the right if Kenyans in marking the historical day, further commending officers for a job well done, which he said was necessary to avoid chaotic events as witnessed in the previous protests.
“Saba Saba commemorates a turning point in our country’s journey to multi-party democracy, order and better governance. Kenyans have the right to mark the day in peace and decency. Unfortunately, peaceful demonstrations have recently been infiltrated by criminals out to cause chaos and destruction,” Murkomen said.
According to the CS, the success was witnessed after an increase in number of police forces, who prevented entry into Nairobi CBD, and managed violence outside the city’s business point.
Despite the shutdown, chaos were witnessed in Ngong Road, Kangemi, Roysambu, Githurai 44, as a number of businesses were looted and destructed, Murkomen said the day witnessed less havoc week during the June 25 anniversary protests, as goons tried to infiltrated the protests.
“I went around Nairobi City to thank our law enforcement officers who were on duty to ensure the safety of our people and the security of their property. Thanks to their efforts and other officers across the country, incidents of violence, looting and destruction of property were markedly reduced today compared to last week,” he further lauded the officers.
Murkomen said the government is committed to ensure that demonstrations and protests are peaceful and orderly. He further confirmed that the criminals who had caused havoc June 25th demonstrations have already been charged in court.
“Likewise, those responsible for today’s incidents will also be investigated and charged. While the inconvenience faced in accessing places of work today is regrettable, the heightened security measures were necessary to ensure the safety of our people and the security of their property and businesses,” he said.
As he praises police officers for job well done, KNCHR recorded death of 10 people across the country, and over 30 hospitalized with gunshot wounds, 39 arrested as two people are reportedly abducted by the police officers.
