Saboti Member of Parliament Hon. Caleb Amisi has urged the government to put in place mechanisms to secure employment opportunities for inmates who acquire skills while in prison, saying this is key to successful rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Speaking during visits to Kitale Women Prison, Kitale Annex Prison, Kitale Main Prison, and Kitale Medium Prison on Christmas day, Amisi emphasized that training inmates without providing post release employment exposes them to the risk of re offending.
“We are training them so that they can go out and look for opportunities. If we are training our youths in prison, then we must also ensure they get jobs after that,” Amisi said. “This will help keep them away from further wrongdoing.”
The legislator noted that meaningful employment after release would not only restore dignity to former inmates but also enhance public safety and reduce repeat offenses.
Amisi said his prison visits were part of how he marked the festive season, choosing service over celebration. He described the outreach as a reaffirmation of his commitment to inclusive leadership, rehabilitation, and social justice.
“This festive season, I marked Christmas through service taking the spirit of the season to our correctional facilities and reaffirming my belief in dignity, rehabilitation, and a nation that leaves no one behind,” he said.
The MP called on the government, private sector, and relevant institutions to work together to ensure trained inmates are supported with employment opportunities upon their release.
