Samburu County governor Lati Lelelit has called out former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua for misleading Kenyans about government’s health insurance Social Health Authority (SHA), not working.
Refuting his claims, Lelelit rebuked Gachagua for failing to tell people in Nyeri that SHA is not working, where Lelelit claimed has the highest number of registered residents after Mombasa County. He urged residents of Samburu to come out and register in large numbers, to reduce the burden of healthcare bills.
“He is telling Kenyans that SHA is not working, yet his home county is the second across the country with county with highest number of registered residents on SHA, why is he misleading our people, while his people in Nyeri are benefitting from SHA? We will come out and register like Nyeri as the people of Samburu, and I want to appreciate them for registering with SHA,” Lelelit remarked.
Gachagua has constantly insisted that SHA is not working, blasting his former boss for imposing it on Kenyans, interfering with the healthcare system that was working well with the previous National health insurance Fund (NHIF).
After the presentation of Finance Bill 2025, for the Financial year 2025/2026, Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale, lauded the National Treasury for increasing allocation to the ministry to KSh 138.1 billion, which he said will help in the rollout of the controversial government health insurance SHA, and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Additionally, Lelelit further faulted the DCP party leader over his remarks on likening the post election violence to a Christmas party, stating that Gachagua should stop politicking with the events of 2007, as people lost their loved ones and properties. According to him, the 2027 general elections will be the most peaceful elections ever witnessed in the country.
“2007 was not a Christmas party, over 2000 people died following the clashes, while others lost their properties. Such happening should never happen in this county as well as in Samburu under my watch! We will not fight anyone after elections, 2027 general elections will be the most peaceful in the country, they should stop inciting people,” he further stated.
However, Gachagua dismissed the criticism over his remarks, stating that it was misinterpreted, as his statement was a precaution to the electoral commission, and not incitement as popularized by Kenya Kwanza government.
