It was tears of joy as family, friends and government officials gathered at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive Stephen Munyakho, who had been jailed in Saudi Arabia for 14 years.
Currently identified as Abdulkareem, arrived in Nairobi shortly before midnight on a flight from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Munyakho was jailed after an altercation that resulted into the death of a Yemen nationalist at a working site.
According to a statement from the office of CS foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi, the Kenyan citizen was released after he completed all judicial process in Saudi Arabia, which resulted in his release on July 22.
After his release, Munyakho was granted his freedom and performed Umrah (the minor pilgrimage) before being transferred from Shimeisi Prison in the Mecca Governorate to a deportation centre, where he awaited clearance to return home.
His mother during an interview with Citizen after his release, said she was unable to meet the family of the victim following the situation. She described her son as calm and loving person, stating that the incident was unfortunate.
According to Citizen Digital, Munyakho’s homecoming has been described by his family as nothing short of a miracle, bringing closure to a case that had gripped the nation’s attention for years.
