The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party has called out the Kenya Kwanza Government for increased cases of abduction and killing of Kenyans, especially the young (Gen Zs).
In their official X ODM party account, the Raila Odinga led party stated that the recent killings was not part of the March 7, agreement that was signed between ODM and the ruling party United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a Joint Framework, which both President William Ruto and Odinga agreed was meant to bring Kenyans together.
The party has called on the government to shun division and instead embrace cohesion among Kenyans.
“Stop killing Kenyans, Stop killing the youth, Stop abduction. This is what we agreed on March 7. We must embrace cohesion and not divisions,” read the post.
The change of tone coming after Kenyans outcry on his silence after X Homabay blogger Albert Ojwang’ was killed in police custody at Central Police Station in Nairobi on Sunday 9.
However, Odinga had released a statement condemning the death of Ojwang’, terming it as a careless and heartbreaking death in the hands of police, who he said what to bring chaos in the country, and called for urgent reforms in the National Police Service (NPS), sentiments echoed by former interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i.
“Mr. Ojwang’ joins the horrifying long list of young and defenseless Kenyans whose lives have been taken too soon, in brutal and senseless circumstances, at the hands of the police. While these deaths cause tremendous pain to individuals and other families, they seriously erode the authority and credibility of the police and the state, that is a significant step towards chaos and collapse,” read the statement.
While in Kajiado, President William Ruto assured Kenyans on his government’s commitment to protect Kenyans against rogue police officers, further stating that the government will ensure that they are weed out, as they plan on modernizing the service to ensure the officers carry their duty with due diligence.
“We will make sure we professionalize police service and eliminate police men and women who abuse the authority they have. We are ensuring every policeman and woman, as they discharge their noble duties of protecting, they are adequately covered by insurance, adequately supported with a proper housing program. We will protect citizens from rogue police officers and hold them to account,” he asserted.
