Police in Dar Salaam Tanzania surrounded the Ufufuo Wa Uzima church under the leadership of Bishop Josephat Gwajima on Monday, June 2 at 11pm in the night.
In a video curculating online in the morning of Tuesday, June 3, Gwajima said that his fellow religious leaders came to his rescue at the church, following information that his premises has been surrounded by police from Tanzanian Authority.
Gwajima a critic of President Suluhu Hassan, has found himself in trouble with the Tanzanian Authority, following his remarks that he will not stop calling out the government over increase cases of abductions and forced disappearance that is being carried out by Suluhu’s government.
He however said that he is not aware of the motive behind heavy police surrounding his church, confirming to his congregants about the incident at his church.
“It is 11:15pm at night here in Dar Salaam and fellow bishops came after being informed that police have come and surrounded the Ufufuo Wa Uzima Church in Bungo. They quickly responded to the calls to also understand what is happening, as I also have no idea of what is happening. There are three police barricades surrounding the church. but we are yet to establish what is happening,” he explained.
Gwajima also said that he is not aware if they are police officers or those being tasked to execute the disappearances and abductions, but urged his followers to remain calm as he will give them further updates about the situation.
Suluhu administration has been on the radar following killings, disappearances and abductions of those opposing her administration. His main challenger, Tundu Lissu is staring at a possible jail term, currently facing treason allegations, after he called for changes in election reforms before the elections are carried out.
Gwajima calls come after two activists from Uganda and Kenya, Agatha Atuhaire and Boniface Mwangi respectively were detained, tortured and deported in inhumane manner by the Authorities from the Republic of Tanzania.
After the unfortunate incident, Suluhu addressed the nation, and stated that she will not allow intruders who have failed to uphold morals in their country to interfere with peace of Tanzania. Martha Karua, former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and activist Hanifa Farsafi were deported after jetting in Tanzania to stand in solidarity with detained Lissu, during the hearing of his case in May.
