The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially advertised the position of Chief Executive Officer set to replace Dr. Nancy Macharia, who has been on service for 10 years.
Macharia has official stepped down, ahead of her retirement on June 30, 2025, however, she had proceeded to her terminal leave that began on June, Sunday 1.
“As I end my 10-yearservice as the TSC Chief Executive, on 30, June 2025, I can only look back with an incredible tinge of satisfaction for the milestones achieved in the teaching in the teaching service,” Macharia bid the commission farewell.
As the teachers’ employer awaits appointment of new CEO, Evaline Mitei has been appointed as the acting CEO to oversee the Commission’s operations until a permanent successor is appointed.
However, her tenure was marked with several challenges, including the recent promotion of over 23,000 teachers, with some regions decrying unfair treatment by the commission.
Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASALs), Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Kenya Union Post Primary Education (KUPPET), faulted the commission for unfair treatment on promotion of teachers in Marsabit County. The commission reduced the number of teachers who had earlier received promotion letters from 431 to 246, with 185 teachers missing on the promotion.
They said that the move will affect the quality of education in the county, as the demoralized teachers will not give out their best to the students, which at the end will affect performance among students.
Additionally, they faulted the commission for allowing the National Assembly Committee on Education for manipulating and interfering with the duties of the commission, despite the call by the constitution of TSC being independent.
The Committee on Education led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, was left in shock after 99,000 teachers were on acting capacity without allowances for six months, despite the budgetary allocation for the teachers allowance.
The committee sought to understand the reason behind the mystery and where does the money allocated for goes, when teachers are not being paid.
However, Macharia leaves the commission with milestones, including employment of over 76,000 teachers for both new curriculum Competence Based Education (CBE), and the 8.4.4.4 system.
