The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), has arrested 14 suspects in connection with the incident at Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya’s home, where a group of unidentified people stormed the premises and disrupted an operation by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers.
According to the DCI, the suspects were taken into custody to also aid in providing further information regarding the incident. The suspects include Leon Ikua, Brian Mutonyi, James Maina, Churchil Ambula, Chirispus Kingara, Joseph Kakanja and Daniel Kanyingi.
Other suspects include Levy Kiprotich, John Kamau, Benjamin Bukhala, Lavingtone Kipkemboi, Isaac Nyongesa Wanyonyi Wasike, Tonny Wafula Wasike and Ismael Juma.
On Monday, May 19, chaos erupted at Natembeya’s home during the raid, as a statement by EACC arrested the him, and he faced charges of conflict of interest and the unlawful acquisition of public property.
During the raid, several vehicles belonging to DCI, were vandalized after angry youths deflated the officers tyres outside the gate, forcing police officers to use teargas to disperse the slowly growing rowdy youths resisting the raid.
Natembeya was arraigned before Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, before Principal Magistrate C.N Ondieki, the accused denied the charges and was released on a bond of KSh 1 million with one surety, or a cash bail of Kes500,000. He was further barred from accessing his office for a period of 60 days.
However, Saboti MP and ODM lawmaker Caleb Amisi condemned the raid of his Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya by armed and masked police officers at his home in Milimani Kitale.
Amisi expressed his disappointments to the government for using security agencies to raid politicians without prior notice and lack of evidence as backward and a form of anarchy.
Additionally, opposition leaders led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K Eugene Wamalwa slammed EACC, statement on allegations against Natembeya, for being weaponized by the Kenya Kwanza government to suppress the dissenting voices, which s a breach of the 2010 Kenyan Constitution.
