Peter Wanundu, 75-year-old artist living with partial blindness in Kiminini Sub-County is a happy man, after the George Natembeya Foundation build a new house for him.
Despite entertaining the Luhya Community with his melodies tones for decades, Wanundu was living in utter dilapidated condition. In restoring his honour and dignity, the foundation led by the chairman Peter Nang’ole, built Wanundu a new house, complete with a well-furnished pit latrine.
The artist who could not hide his joy, thanked the foundation led by the founder Trans Nzoia County governor George Natembeya for the sole restoration of life and respect.
“I’m very grateful today for governor’s foundation, acting on my plight after they saw photos online on the my sorry situation, and swiftly worked upon by building this house today. I’m very happy, as this act has restored my joy and life of honour,” Wanundu joyfully remarked.
Gracing the event during of handing the keys to the artist, Natembeya said that Nang’ole volunteered a piece of land, with Natembeya confirming that it is the sixth house the foundation is building for identified vulnerable families across Trans Nzoia.
“This money we are using to build our family is volunteered through our members. This piece of land was donated by Dr. Nang’ole. As a foundation, we go around villages looking for vulnerable families who deserve the house, and we built for them, This is the sixth house we are building for our people,” Natembeya confirmed.
In what appeared to be jab directly to Kenya Kwanza government affordable housing program, which he said is being allocated billions of money with the National Treasury is of no impact to the common mwananchi. According to him, the act which he is doing is more tangible than the popularized affordable housing program.
“This issue of building units and apartments that people can go and buy, people do not have money, to help common mwanachi, build a house in the village hand him/her the keys, personally I don’t recognize this affordable housing thing being allocated billions of money with no direct impact to Kenyans. I’m doing this to show the president that it is attainable if this money is consolidated,” Natembeya remarked.
Natembeya’s remark on affordable housing comes weeks after COTU SG Francis Atwoli accused the government for misusing the housing levy funds, remarks dismissed by PS Charles Hinga, who said the levy is a social amenity fund, and could be used to construct markets, hospitals and other open spaces.
