Eldoret has ordered a mental assessment for police constable who shot two people at a club in Eldoret Uasin Gishu County in June at a Pub in Jua Kali Trading Centre along Eldoret-Webuye Highway.
Eldoret Principal Magistrate Caroline Wattima directed that police constable Eric Kirui be escorted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) to undergo assessment to determine if he is fit to stand trial.
Kirui is expected in court on Tuesday July 22 before the Court’s judge to take plea in connection to the brutal murder of Caroline Malakwen and Ignatius Kipchumba.
His lawyers Nathan Oburu and Calvine Ojalla told the court that Kirui was injured by his colleagues during arrest, and requested the Court to allow him seek medical attention at a public hospital before taking his plea.
Wattima further directed that Kirui be transferred to Eldoret GK remand prison, from his current place of detention Eldoret Central Police station, where he was being held since his arrest in June.
Kirui was attached at Tembelio Police Station in Moiben Sub- County, is allegedly accused of shooting Ms. Malakwen and Kipchumba using his AK 47 rifle on the night of June 23, in a suspected love triangle.
Malakwen was the owner of the pub, where she sadly mate her untimely death.
Cases of officers turning their firearms against civilians have in the recent day, killing and inflicting injuries to their colleagues in suspected mental health issues.
On Friday July 4, a police officer in Kericho lobbied teargas inside a hotel , causing panic and stampede among customers who were enjoying their meals in the evening.
According to witnesses, the officer dressed in civilian clothes entered the restaurant and started harassing customers inside before he was thrown out sending threats of dealing with them.
The angry officer later returned with a teargas canister, which he released inside causing commotion and fear among staff and customers.
