Leaders from across the continent continue to mourn former Zambian president Edgar Lungu, who passed on, June, Thursday 5.
Lungu’s death was announced by his political party Patriotic Front that the former head of state died on Thursday morning, while receiving specialized treatment at a medical center in Pretoria South Africa, where had been admitted.
Mourning the late president, President William Ruto has mourned him as a a patriotic leader that led the people of Zambian with commitment and zeal.
“President Lungu was a progressive and outstanding leader, who served the people of Zambia with zeal and commitment,” President William Ruto mourned.
His colleague Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu, mourned Lungu sending her condolences to the republic of Zambia at this difficult moment.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the former President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu. On behalf of the Government and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, I extend our heartfelt condolences to His Excellency, Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, President Lungu’s family, friends and the people of Zambia,” Samia wrote.
Zambia’s sitting president Hakainde Hichilema led the nation in mourning the death of his predecessor on his official X account.
“Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Zambia’s Sixth President, H.E. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who passed on today. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
After the announcement, Lungu’s daughter who is also a member of parliament in the Zambian National Assembly, mourned his father as a man of dignity, and disclosed how her father’s health was handled in privacy and dignity.
“My father had been under medical supervision in recent weeks. This condition was managed with dignity and privacy,” Talisa Lungu wrote.
According to a report by The East African, Lungu was suffering from a rare health condition that narrowed his oesophagus, which he had previously receiving treatment in South Africa. Days after taking the presidency, Lungu was taken ill, and later underwent a surgical procedure that was reportedly unavailable in Zambia.
